WESTFIELD, NJ — For a limited time, Roosterspin in Downtown Westfield is taking its deep-fried Korean corn dogs, dipping them in Ghirardelli hot fudge sauce and decorating them with multicolored sprinkles.
The treats are part of Downtown Westfield’s self-guided chocolate tour, one of several events the town is holding in honor of a temporary interactive seesaw art exhibit at the train station.
The Korean restaurant that’s famous for its double-fried chicken is offering the sweet-and-savory snack on a stick two for $4 (wet naps gratis) when you stop by Friday, Saturday or Sunday during the next two weeks.
Korean corn dogs have always been popular on the kids’ menu and as happy hour item at Roosterspin’s New Brunswick location, owner Mihae Cho said.
“When Downtown Westfield was offering a chocolate tour and asked about a sampling offer for the event, I wanted to offer something unique and fun that people can walk around with easily while they are outside for the seesaw ride, so thought of corn dogs on a stick,” Cho said. “Since it's available all day I thought it would be nice to be sweet but also savory, so we dipped it in chocolate fudge.”
“It’s like dessert and dinner all at once,” 10-year-old Evelyn Lieberman said after taking her first bite. The 5th grader, helping her mom research this story, devoured one in minutes, as did her 13-year-old brother.
“Corn dog” is actually a bit of a misnomer for the Korean version of this snack, Cho explained.
“We don't use cornmeal — it's all flour base with egg and milk, so it's softer and it's more like pancake taste,” Cho said.
The restaurant typically covers them with panko breadcrumbs for a crispy outside, then sprinkles them with powdered sugar and drizzles them with ketchup.
Cho said that the beef franks they use have lower water content that works better for these treats.
She estimated that the restaurant sold about 150 fudge-covered corn dogs each day during the first weekend of the chocolate tour.
“I think many people were more so curious about what it would taste like and wanted to try. Almost everyone we asked loved it and I couldn't be happier for the feedback we got,” Cho said.
“I think many customers will return and ask for it after this event is over,” she added. “We are thinking about making it in bite size with different sausages and sauce options. If you think of it as fluffy pancake with all types of sweet drizzle and sausage or bacon on the side, I think many other sweets will balance well.”
