Health Matters: Kids Eat Right Month - NBC2 News

Type two diabetes, cardiac disease, and obesity—they’re diagnoses that health experts are now seeing in children. “Habits that children develop in childhood are more likely to follow them into adulthood,” explained Lee Health clinical dietitian Noel Konken. Which is why she says, it’s important to make sure kids are exposed to a variety of healthy foods. “Making sure that your child is getting a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and also low-fat dairy.”

August is Kids eat right month—a campaign created by the academy of nutrition and dietetics foundation to highlight nutrition programs in hopes of preventing childhood obesity. “A lot of patients are coming in with false health information because it’s everywhere on the web, so it’s definitely great to promote real science-driven data for our patients,” said Konken.

She also suggests families take this month to focus on the 9-5-2-1-0 method. “The 9 stands for making sure that your child is getting nine hours of restful sleep. The 5 is you want to choose five different servings of fruit and vegetables within the day. Two stands for limiting screen time to no more than 2 hours per day. One stands for making sure your child is getting one hour of active play, or physical activity, and finally zero means to limit sugar-sweetened beverages,” she said.

Limiting sugar, increasing physical activity, and encouraging nutritious food choices can help children develop healthy lifelong habits.
