Let them eat pie! Records set for competitive eating contests, plus race results for Sunday - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The results for Day Two of the Richmond County Fair are down for the record books in 2021. On this overcast day, the rain held out for several contests — Pie-Eating, Shopping Cart Scurry, Hula Hoop, Potato Sack Races, Three-Legged Races, and the Disc Toss.

Big shockers came from the pie and hot dog eating competitions: Anthony Lopez won both within a matter of hours — a first-time feat for an individual in the annual challenge. But there’s more to the marvel: Organizer Gale Cirigliano said Lopez ate six hot dogs then, in a separate event, devoured one blueberry pie in a matter of minutes.

She explained, “They only get one pie but they have to complete it within two minutes and no one has ever finished a pie — ever.”

That is...until this year.

She paused and added, “It’s not like a phony pie. It’s a full pie. It’s got the blueberries in it. It’s got whipped cream. If you’re eating a full pie, it’s a hefty thing.”

After 17 years of running this contest, Cirigliano has learned to stand behind the food competitors. She admits it’s a tough scene to watch contestants straight on. Plus, she added graciously: there’s the human element to consider. EMTs from North Shore Rescue and FDNY stand nearby, just in case.

For the weekend-long chow-down, 200 pies were produced and donated by Mark’s Bake Shoppe of Richmond.

Overall prizes for the 42nd annual borough fair included blue, red and yellow ribbons — and, yes...the privilege of winning. For the competitive eaters, there were gratis pies and/or franks.

Contest results for the Labor Day edition at Historic Richmond Town’s special weekend will be published afterward on SILive.com. Participants should sign up for the contest at the fair where the schedule for the day is posted.
